The man’s left hand rests thoughtfully on his face, while his right hand clutches his head, conveying deep introspection and turmoil. This evocative piece, titled “A Voice Not Heard,” created in 2024, utilizes graphite on acid-free paper to masterfully depict the silent agony and the struggle of unspoken words. Description for the visually impaired [alt text]:
“Resurrection”, a graphite on paper drawing by Shawn Edwards, interweaves disparate elements into an exuberant composition. At its heart is the figure of St. Mary of Guadalupe, her hands folded in prayer, standing on roses atop a full moon unzipped to reveal the Eye of Horus. In the background, a hand pierced with a nail creates a poignant counterpoint. To the right, a woman’s face levitates alongside a skull-shaped mask and an angel’s wing, adding layers of mystery and symbolism. Edwards’ work is a rich tapestry of religious and mythological motifs, inviting viewers into a world of introspection and wonder.

Description for the visually impaired [alt text]:
In this meticulously detailed graphite drawing, Shawn Edwards captures a profound sense of nostalgia and retrospection. The piece illustrates the lower half of a harnessed horse’s head, its muzzle seemingly disappearing into a poignant void. Edwards’ past experience with rodeo life permeates the artwork, imbuing it with a sense of memory and longing. The detailed harness and the fading features of the horse speak to a bygone era of raw energy and unbridled passion. Edwards’ mastery of light and shadow underlines his talent for evoking emotion through the subtlest of details. His work is not only a testament to his technical skill but also a deeply personal exploration of his memory.

Description for the visually impaired [alt text]:
In “Circle of Life,” Shawn Edwards presents a mesmerizing graphite on paper drawing that captures the viewer’s eye with its intricate details. The central element is a screaming face, expelling a raven into the air – an image both startling and captivating. Encircling this dramatic scene is the Uroboros snake, forever consuming its own tail, a powerful symbol of eternity and the cyclical nature of life. Edwards’ painstakingly detailed style lends a sense of tangible reality to these fantastical elements, creating a potent visual narrative that resonates with depth and introspection.

Description for the visually impaired [alt text]:
“Transformation”, a graphite drawing by Shawn Edwards, is a complex tableau brimming with symbolism. The Maya Hu Nab Ku symbol anchors the composition, pointed to by a naked man preparing to swing a rope-tethered screaming demon through a cross-shaped aperture. A woman’s face cries out, a dove escaping from her open head, breaking free from its chain. A plush teddy bear is crushed by a skeletal hand next to the astrological symbol for Pluto, signifying transformation. An angelic figure, a nude woman with wings, contrasts with the serene face of Hanuman. The detailed style enhances the dreamlike quality of this profound piece.

Description for the visually impaired [alt text]:
In “Heart in Full Bloom,” Shawn Edwards presents a mesmerizing tableau of romantic aesthetics so overpowering that it initially masks the macabre central image of a heart being crushed by a skeletal hand. The recurring motif of a zipped bolt lock embraces the heart, revealing an All-Seeing Eye. Surrounding birds and blossoms dissolve their forms into droplets of water – tears or sweat, perhaps. This transformation seems to symbolize two souls in the flight of love melting into one, as the heart itself morphs into a journey of pain and fragrance. Edwards’ characteristic attention to detail is evident, and the theme, inspired by a poem written by him, adds a layer of profound depth to this haunting artwork.

Description for the visually impaired [alt text]:
An obsessively detailed graphite portrayal of a horse. The creature’s neck and part of its muzzle seem to fade or be sun-bleached, creating a haunting blend of presence and absence. This piece is one of the few a series of horse portraits with vanishing elements he’s been working on btw 2000 and 2004, as an artistic choice that resonates deeply with feelings of nostalgia and retrospection. After a life-altering accident left him unable to perform basic life functions for over two years, Edwards’ work has taken on new depth, becoming a poignant exploration of memory, loss, and resilience.

Description for the visually impaired [alt text]:
“Rape of Innocence,” a graphite drawing from 2002, presents a chilling tableau that is both haunting and provocative. A skeletal figure, adorned only with a papal mitre, wields an axe in one hand and a rosary in the other, its foot resting on a bible. Before it stands a small, naked child, turned away from us, the fear or tears palpable even without seeing the face. Edwards’ composition is stark and clean, the white background serving to amplify the intricate details of the figures. This piece is a poignant commentary on innocence lost, power misused, and faith betrayed.
